Alongside Federico II University for the digitalization of services for students, faculty, and staff

SMC, the Liferay, Open Source & RIOS Center of Excellence of the DGS Group, and Liferay are continuing the digitalization work at the University of Naples Federico II with the development of the digital experience platform: a digital environment that has brought together the services of one of Italy's largest universities into a single access point, now used by over 72,000 students, faculty, and staff.

The platform created for the University of Naples offers a single digital entry point for over 72,000 students, faculty, and staff, with personalized paths. Accessibility and usability have grown by +25%. Now, the integration between departments is underway.

The project has changed the way the academic community uses the portal, creating a single, efficient entry point for services previously distributed across different systems and platforms. The new platform adapts to different types of users: prospective students, enrolled students, faculty, and staff. A single platform for different paths.

The collaboration with the University is part of a journey that began in 2012 and which, in 2023, led to the overall redesign of Federico II's digital ecosystem, bringing together the institutional portal, restricted areas, and access to services within a common platform.

A digitalized university: the results

  • Accessibility and usability +25%. A single access point has reduced fragmentation between systems: navigation is clearer and content is easier to find.

  • Editorial efficiency and time-to-market +30%. Departmental teams can publish autonomously, reducing reliance on technical interventions and accelerating the release of new features.

  • Redesign completed in less than a year, for one of the largest and most complex universities in Italy.

In this project, SMC supported the University in the architectural assessment of the solution and managed the provision of subscriptions, continuing a collaboration that has lasted for over ten years. As a Liferay Partner, SMC brings to the DGS Group a recognized specialization in designing scalable and user-centric digital platforms for large public and private organizations.

Liferay DXP made it possible to bring together content, services, and restricted areas into a single environment and differentiate the experience based on the user profile. The cloud-native architecture and integration capabilities allowed the portal to connect to systems already in use at the University, ensuring service continuity, data security, and GDPR compliance.

The evolution of Federico II's digital ecosystem now continues with the extension of the digital experience platform to the department portals, progressively completing the design of an integrated and cohesive digital ecosystem for the entire academic community.

"The new digital ecosystem allows us to offer more accessible, integrated, and innovative services, tangibly improving the experience of students, new users, faculty, and staff," stated Giovanni Battista Barone, Head of the Systems Division of the University Center for Information Services (C.S.I.) at the University of Naples Federico II.
